1830
The Mexican government bans American immigration to Texas
Concerned about Americans having too much influence on Texians (they weren't known as Texans until later), The president of Mexico bans any more Americans from moving into Texas, but the Americans did not stop. There were about 35,000 Americans living there by 1836.
1833
The Mexican government rejects the Texas Constitution
Unhappy with Mexican rule, Texians write their own constitution and ask the Mexican government for additional changes. This is rejected.
Oct. 2, 1835
Battle of Gonzalez
This battle marked the beginning of the Texas Revolution. Texian settlers successfully defended a cannon from Mexican troops, signaling the start of armed conflict.
Oct. 9, 1835
Battle of Goliad
Texas settlers attack Mexican soldiers at Presidio La Bahia near Goliad. The Texians win the battle and force the soldiers to leave, allowing the Texians to take thousands of dollars worth of food and supplies.
Oct-Dec, 1835
Siege of Bexar
Texian forces laid siege to the Mexican garrison in San Antonio (Bexar), leading to the eventual withdrawal of Mexican troops. This was a significant early victory for the Texians.

Declaration of Independence
Texians declared independence from Mexico at the Convention of 1836, establishing the Republic of Texas.
Mar. 6, 1836
Fall of the Alamo
After a 13-day siege, Mexican forces led by General Santa Anna overran the Alamo mission in San Antonio. All Texian defenders, including notable figures like Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, were killed.
Mar. 27, 1836
Goliad Massacre
After 400 Texians surrender at the Battles of Refugio and Coleto, Mexican General Santa Anna orders them executed. The killings, that took place in Goliad, make outraged Texians rally even more for their independence.
Apr. 21, 1836
Battle of San Jacinto
General Sam Houston led Texian forces to a decisive victory over Santa Anna’s army in this battle, effectively ending the Texas Revolution. Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign treaties recognizing Texian independence.
Oct. 22, 1836
Sam Houston named president
Sam Houston becomes the first president of Texas after it wins its independence from Mexico. He will also be the third president and later becomes the governor of Texas when it joins the United States.
Dec. 29, 1845
Texas becomes a US state
The United States annexes Texas, making it the nation's 28th state. It is the only state that was its own country (the Republic of Texas) before becoming a state.
